The Nation’s Favourite Dessert Accompaniment
If it’s your turn to entertain family and friends with a fabulous meal, you will need a show stopping dessert to impress your guests with and quite usually this will involve lashings of the nation’s favourite dessert accompaniment of cream.
To help you make the best of your dessert this article gives some hints and tips for using cream and maybe a fact or two that you may not know…
Cream is the layer of higher-fat material which we all know and love that forms on top of raw milk after it has separated. The milk fat content determines what it can be used for and whether or not it can be whipped.
There are six main types of cream available here in the UK:
- To make sure you get the best from your cream, always use it at its freshest. Check the use-by date and, as a general rule, don’t keep it in the fridge for more than 10 days.
- Cream is susceptible to absorption of other flavours so always keep it in a sealed container.
- If you leave cream out for extended periods, it’s life will be reduced considerably, it’s therefore recommended that you always keep it in the refrigerator at about 4˚C.
It’s a shame to have to throw away any left overs but before you do, did you know cream can be frozen for up to three months? Top tip: if it has less than 40% milk fat (whipping, sterilised or single cream), you’ll need to lightly whip the cream before freezing it and always be sure to thaw it in the fridge.
